Chemical dependency can result from many things:alcohol, caffeine and drugs. But one of the most

difficult dependencies to      36     is also one of the most      37      smoking. Now, researchers may have found an important      38     in the brain to smoking addiction(上瘾) . Scientists studied thirty-two former smokers. All of the men and women had brain damages      39     strokes(中风). Half of them reported that they  were  able  to      40      cigarettes  quickly  and  easily  after  they       41      the  brain  damage.  Medical

check-up showed that a part of the brain called the insula(脑岛)of twelve of those sixteen patients had been   42      .  Experts believe  it brings  together  emotional      43      and  information  of sense  like      44      . Experiments have suggested that the insula has a lot to do      45     the experience of pain and some      46  emotions like fear, anger and happiness. Antoine Bechara, one of the leaders of the study, says the insula is not the only area of the brain      47     cigarette addiction. He says many parts of the brain are connected with chemical dependency,      48     the damage to the insula does seem to      49     a necessary link in the smoking addiction. The patients did not      50     all dependencies--they still had a normal      51     for food, for example. This may suggest that the insula is more      52     dependencies that come from a      53  pleasure  like  smoking.  The  researchers  say  their  discovery  may  point  to  a       54      point  in  smoking addiction, which could lead to better ways to help people stop smoking - but much more      55     is needed.

A self-made billionaire who created the world’s largest home-delivery pizza network has sold up to devote his time --and virtually all his money--to charity(慈善).

Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino’s Pizza, has got rid of his helicopter, yacht, aircraft, radio stations, a car collection and an island resort on Lake Huron, taking them as“distraction”

The money from those sales has gone to a host of charities, along with $85 million from selling the Chicago  Cubs baseball team  six years  ago. Mr  Monaghan has now  sold more than  90 percent  of his

stake(股份)in Dominos for $1billion.

“At the age of 61, thinking over my life and the goals I have yet to achieve, I have decided to retire from my active role in Domino’s Pizza and devote more time to my charitable endeavours, ” he said from his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Mr. Monaghan has already set up a charitable foundation and is expected to spend most of his time and cash in the next few years building Catholic schools across America.

He and his brother James began their home delivery pizza chain with one Michigan store, DomiNick’s, which they bought with $900 they borrowed in 1960.

Over the years, Mr. Monaghan built up the business, focusing on free, fast home-delivery until the point today when there are 6, 100 Domino stores worldwide, about two-thirds of them in the United States.

Mr. Monaghan had a tough childhood, brought up in foster homes and joined the army at 17. When he left the army, he turned his mind to pizza and in a fiercely-competitive market, built a chain that is second in size to Pizza Hut.

He will not give up Domino’s completely. He keeps a small stake and will remain on the board as non-executive chairman.

C. A small amount of money.                                  D. Support from his parents. 59. What is the best title for this passage?

During the teenage years, parents walk a fine line between holding on and letting go . Many parents of high school kids find it difficult to step back from the role they played in the past-when they reminded children of deadlines, checked homework, stood up for them and protected their interests.

That's appropriate during elementary and middle school. But in high school, teenagers are feeling their way into adulthood. They have four years before they become legal adults. At that time, everyone they meet (including college professors) will hold them accountable for their actions.

It's important for parents to look at the high school years as a transitional(转折 ) period during  which teenagers are assuming ever greater responsibility for their lives. Here are some examples from kids  voice. It's embarrassing(尴尬的) when parents do my homework. If I need your help, I'll ask for it. My  parents spend too much time at school. They don't pay as much attention to me as I would like. My parents  could only find one night when they could both attend my school play. I thought they’d at least come to the

opening and closing. Watch and listen to me carefully. I'll let you know how much I want and when.

Here are some ways for parents to get along well with the growing children about their learning. Show an interest in their lives by asking questions, listening and following up on previous talks. Go to academic events, games and theater performances -- whatever your child is involved in and/or welcomes you to attend. Help them find resources to be successful. Stress the importance of education-- and actually live it. Show kids that learning is continuous by taking classes yourself and broadening your own horizons.

60. What does the author believe high school students should be like?

A. Be happy as teenagers.                                      B. Be responsible for their actions.

C. Be regarded as adults by their parents.              D. Be ready to make their own friends 61. Which is an example of what teenagers like parents to do?

A. Perform in the school play                                 B. Spend time on listening

C. Talk to their teachers often                                D. Correct homework for them. 62. Which of the following is the authors advice for parents?

A. Paying attention to teenagers scores.

B. Talking with teenagers about their failures.

C. Attending school activities when necessary.

D. Practicing or learning with teenagers after school.

63. What kind of people would be interested in reading the topic?

A. Textbook writers.        B. Biologists.                C. Art teachers.                 D. Parents.

C

Plants have no brain and no nervous system. Yet they take in different kinds of information and can  make good decisions. Plants also find water without sight or touch. They are everywhere in our lives: lawns, salads and pots on a sunny windowsill. They're so familiar that it’s easy to forget how magical they really  are.

Dinneny is a plant biologist in Stanford. He conducts projects just to discover how plants hunt for water. What he learns, though, could be useful in finding better ways to grow food. These questions are important in“this huge crisis we face,  says Jonathan Lynch, a root biologist. The human population is growing -- and fast. Whether farmers will be able to increase crops production and keep up is a huge question. And Earth’s changing climate only makes this more complicated.

To study how plants grow those roots, biologists often start growing plants in the lab, Dinneny and his colleagues created a system called GLO-Roots. The system is like mini versions of the conditions that roots find in the ground. But these roots are special: They can give out light in underground. Computers analyze where  that  light   shows  up.  And  that  gives  researchers  clues  to  how  roots  are  responding  to  their environment.

Side roots that branch out toward water may be familiar. Yet it's another strange thing of plant life. For  vertebrates(脊椎动物), body parts form on babies developing in protected spaces. Egg shells or mothers  bodies can screen out many outside influences. Cues from soil water, however, change where the little side  root forms. For plants, it's as if the number of mouths on an unborn baby’s head changed if there was more  food outside.

64. Why does the author think plants are magical?

A. They make decisions with no brain.                B. They get information with sight.

C. They are familiar but easy to forget.                 D. They grow all year round.

65. In what sense is Dinnenys research important?

A. It helps avoid population crisis.                      B. It increases crop production.

C. It reduces climate influence.                            D. It discovers plants with more roots.

66. Why was the GLO-Roots system created?

A. To find the best conditions for roots.              B. To see how plants grow without soil.

C. To check how roots give out light.                   D. To observe how roots grow

67. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?

A. Side roots form in protected spaces.               B. More food outside, more side roots.

C. Roots for plants are heads for babies.            D. Mothers bodies are like soil for roots.

D

Coughing. Sneezing( 打喷嚏). Sometimes the workplace sounds less like an office and more like a hospital ward, especially now that we’re at the height of cold and flu season.

If you're not feeling great, do yourself and your co-workers a favor; Call in sick. You'll likely get better faster and save your employer money.

Yes, there's a financial price to coming to work ill. It costs employers $180 billion annually, according to a 2007 study by the Society for Human Resources Management. That's more than employers pay for employees' absence, which costs only $118 billion a year. Sick employees don't just affect their own work; they infect co-workers who then need to take time off themselves. (Or who come in sick and spread the germs further. )

There's a natural worry that if you don't go in, the work won't get done, or it will pile up so high you'll never be able to get through it all. That’s especially true these days, when it seems everyone is doing more work with less resources.

“People don't want to stay home and add to their co-workers  workloads just because they've got the sniffles, " says Michael Smith, a physician. "In the end it hurts more than it helps. "

Yes, if it’s really nothing more than sniffles, go on in. To be safe, wash your hands more often, don't touch anyone else’s phone or keyboard and always cough or sneeze into a tissue.

Ideally, though, with any true cold, even just a minor one, you should work from home, Smith says. Definitely call in sick, he adds, if you’ve got a stuffed nose, cough, chest congestion or are throwing up. And never go into the office with a fever. People showing up at work sick are a much bigger concern than people missing work when they're not really ill.

68. What does the underlined sentence "Call in sick. ” (Paragraph 2) mean?

A. Phone to the boss to ask for a leave.             B. Find out the cause of the sickness.

C. Gather the sick ones together                         D. Tell others that you are sick. 69. Which of the following will Michael Smith most probably agree with?

A. Go to see a doctor once youve got a stuffed nose.

B. Hand-washing may protect you from catching a cold.

C. Dont take on more work which is beyond your ability.

D. Dont worry about the work when you are not feeling good.

70. It costs employers more to allow employees coming to work ill because              .

A. they spend much money in curing employee’s illness. B. they improve those employees salary as a price.

C. sick employees fail to finish their work.

D. more employees may ask for leave.

71. What is the main subject of the text?

A. Workplace is like a hospital ward at the height of flu season.

B. Health is the most important thing in peoples life. C. Overwork makes people’s health getting worse.

D. People should stay home when they feel sick.

Just as the teacher is coming into the classroom,

one of the boy, Gerald said loudly, The teacher is a real fool. " To our surprise, the students found that the teacher

pretended not have heard this. He didn't look at anyone

and said anything. He just went up to the teacher's desk and began the class. He said, “Today we are go to study

punctuation(标点). Punctuation in a sentence is very importance. Look after this sentence, please, boys and girls. "

He picked with a piece of chalk and wrote the following

sentence in the blackboard:Gerald says the teacher is a real fool.

The classroom laughed immediately.

Now, ” the teachers went on, “with two commas I can change the meaning of a sentence completely. " Then he

putted two commas in the sentence and so the sentence read: Gerald, says the teacher, is a real fool.
